Project Makeover 2022
EW WTF is a project make-over from a custom
typeface I had created back in my first year of studying at university. The brief
was to create a custom typeface and an accompanying zine to document the
process of making the typeface. I was originally inspired by how zines are
folded, which at the time reminded me of bubble gum wrapping! One thing led to
the next, until I was endlessly chewing and forming letters out of bubble gum.
Rather giving this typeface a makeover, I wanted to redesign the zine accompanying the custom type. I remember honestly hating the zine I had originally produced; I had done it in a rush with no reason behind it.

Revisiting this work had reminded me of a
recent series of events, so I based my new zine on a true story; the time I had
bought new pants and sat in gum.
I wanted my zine not only to generate a narrative, but to serve a form of functionality and practicality. I had made my zine out of a sheet of baking paper, acting as a driving motif and reflection of bubble gum, and allowing the reader to inevitably use it as a piece of wrapping to dispose their bubble gum in. Now, people like me don’t have to worry about sitting in gum ever again!
