HOMIE

University Major Work
2022

AWARDED
- Best Major Work 2022 (UWS)

- Best In Show 2022: Peoples Choice Award (UWS)

There’s an unspoken taboo that’s built around creative industries, I sense there's a lack of motivation in what's said to be a ‘dying industry’, and how (to some) you can’t make a successful career out of what you love doing most. I believe people tend to get caught up in trying to get to their final destination without first admiring the creative people, processes, and places surrounding us. These factors help shape what we see as the Australian creative landscape, which is forever changing, multidimensional and exploratory. By highlighting Australian creative industries, we aim to re-spark and nod to the importance of creative outlets and freedom. These are essential for sustaining our future communities, local economies, and individual well-being and sensibility. HOMIE is an open outlet celebrating thinkers, tinkers, and everyone in between. HOMIE’s philosophy aims to re-spark your creative flair and allows you to reflect or recognise the passion you have within yourself to create.

HOMIE’s hero artifact is an exclusive small run publication. It’s not a regular publication, it’s a cool publication. It’s all in the finer details, at HOMIE we honour the craftsmanship and curate each publication to focus on the featured creator’s practises. With HOMIE’s chameleon style branding, we can shift our focus on the good stuff! The collaborating creators and their passion, process and places. Expressing the interests of our creative landscape, HOMIE continues to push the boundaries and questions what a publication can be. By reinventing the boundaries of a traditional book, we continue to further evolve.

The first issue revolves around AJ, an emerging self-taught knitwear designer. This issue is 100% hand made with intention, narrative, and a lot of love. This includes hand pained tags, knitted swatches, both physical and digital interactive touchpoints, and a HOMIE exclusive knitted pouch that can be repurposed in your own ways. Nothing goes to waste, all issues are printed on recycled eco-care paper, pouches are lined with thrifted shirts and second-hand buttons are employed in our sewing kits. From fabric cut offs and yarn scraps, we have handmade ‘thank-you’ swing tags that can be repurposed as cute keyrings.

The hypothetical for issue two is based on a film photographer. The issue will be in the form of film canisters, where readers can pull out the developed film strip and scan in their photos. Further, this issue is accompanied by a disposable film camera, to inspire and encourage the reader to take their own analogue photos. The hypothetical for issue three is based on a Risograph printing service. Focusing on the artform of Risograph printing. This issue will be in the form of a Riso printed calendar featuring monthly discounted sessions for Risograph printing, swatches of print and colour charts and the journey of offset printing.

Among the publications, HOMIE’s future expects to expand with merchandise that accompanies the current issue, printed out of home collateral, exclusive masterclasses, social media, Augmented Realities and a mobile application.

The HOMIE mobile application will further extend our philosophy and broadens our creative connections worldwide. The application is a virtual creative journal in your back pocket. Daily prompts feature as an encouragement of expressing and experimenting with different creative outlets. Allowing the user to have full control in their own creative freedom and providing the ability to consecutively work with others around the world.

The process has really made me appreciate the wonders of collaborating creatively and building connections with others within the creative landscape both personally and professionally. Immersing myself and honouring traditional craftsmanship and handmaking has been my favourite part of the project. Designing sustainably and with purpose had carried my motivation throughout the year and celebrating Australian creative people and landscape has been the soul and body of my project.
I feel proud of myself and what I’ve accomplished throughout my final year at university. This new form is a true labour of love and in order for others to find their own creative sensibility, I had found myself first by producing HOMIE.

I've had such a pleasure creating HOMIE, an open outlet celebrating thinkers, tinkers, and everyone in-between. I hope HOMIE brings you joy, re-sparks your creative flair, and allows you to reflect or recognise the passion you have within yourself to create.
